 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation, [se'lenakinta'nija'peres]; April 16, 1971 - March 31 1995), also known as Selena is an American Tejano performer. Called the "Queen of Tejano music" Her contribution to fashion and music made her one of the most popular Mexican-American entertainers from the second half of the 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third in 2020 in their "Greatest Latino Artists List of All Time", which was based on Latin songs and Latin albums. Some media outlets described her as the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices. She is also regarded as one of the most popular Latin artists of all time and is widely credited with propelling the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest of the Quintanilla family, she first appeared in the music industry as one of the members of the band Selena y Los Dinos, which also included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. The singer was frequently criticized in the 1980s , and was barred from bookings at Texas venues for her performance of Tejano music, a predominantly male-dominated genre. Her fame grew when she was awarded the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist-of-the year in 1987. She was awarded the award nine times. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album in the same year. During that time, her brother was her primary music producer as well as songwriter.Selena released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) and reached top of the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. Music critics called it the "breakthrough record" of her musical career due to its commercial success. One of its songs, "Como la Flor", became one of her biggest tracks. Live! (1993) was nominated as the best Mexican/American album at the 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano recording to win this award. Amor Prohibido became one the most-sold Latin albums in the United States in 1994. It was critically acclaimed as being the catalyst for Tejano music's first marketable era and it became one of the most well-known Latin music subgenres of the time.
